Christchurch City Libraries change their hours from Monday

25 February 2005

Christchurch City Libraries are extending their opening hours from this Monday 28 February, adding an extra 36.5 hours city-wide. The change includes the launch of a seven-day service at key libraries across the city, and gives improved access for everyone, including people at work during the week and families wanting to visit the library together at weekends.

Many libraries will now be open from 9am on weekdays and will stay open later throughout the week. Central Library will now open an hour earlier on weekdays, from 9am to 9pm, and at weekends from 10am to 4pm, an extra eight hours every week. Visits to the Central Library are also easier by taking advantage of the free Christchurch City Council one hour parking at the Farmers car park (entrance behind the library on Oxford Terrace).

Between them, the 13 Christchurch City Libraries will be open for 36.5 extra hours each week. Central, Shirley, South Christchurch and New Brighton libraries will open on Sundays from 10am to 4pm, providing easy access to a library on Sundays no matter where you live in the city. If its current resource consent application is granted, Fendalton library will also offer extended weekend service for the west of the city. Weekend hours at South Christchurch and New Brighton libraries have already proved to be a big success with customers favouring the increased flexibility and reduced congestion at peak times.

Library members can also access Christchurch City Libraries’ digital library 24 hours a day at library.christchurch.org.nz, including checking account details, searching the catalogue, reserving items online, browsing databases and exploring Christchurch’s heritage.
