Young artists invited to enter new sister cities competition

17 February 2005

Teenagers are being offered the chance to have their artwork exhibited in Christchurch and again in Washington DC through the first Christchurch Sister Cities Young Artists Competition.

Entries are now being accepted for the competition, which is being organised by International Christchurch Youth (ICY).   The ICY group is supported by Christchurch City Council’s International Relations team and aims to promote awareness and understanding of the world’s cultures, encourage youth involvement in international relations and promote international friendships.

“We think the competition will be an excellent way to raise awareness of sister cities among young people and encourage them to be part of sister-city exchanges. The more entries we get the better.  We are hoping this competition will become an annual ICY event,” project co-ordinator Hadleigh Milligan said.

Selected artworks from the competition, with the theme 'Connecting Global Villages', will be exhibited at Christchurch youth gallery Creation between 29 March and 15 April.  From these entries, a winning artwork will be chosen and sent to Washington DC, USA to enter the International Sister Cities Young Artists Competition 2005.

Artists judged among the top ten in this year's international competition will each receive US$300 prize money.  The overall winning artwork will then be taken on a world tour until April 2006.  Christchurch's entry in the international competition will be sponsored by our American sister city Seattle.

Entries must be submitted by 18 March 2005 and artists must be aged 13-18 years. Registrations of interest would be appreciated as early as possible.

For further information and to view international winning entries from the last ten years see the news and events section of the website www.christchurch.org.nz/sistercities
