Older adults have all the fun in Shirley

4 February 2005

Shirley Leisure Club is gearing up for an exciting new term of talks, games, visits and workshops, starting next week. It’s a chance to older adults to get together every week, get to know each other and enjoy the broad range of activities on offer.

This year’s first session will be on Wednesday 9 February. The club meets at Shirley Community Centre, on the corner of Shirley Road and Slater Street, every Wednesday throughout the year between 1pm and 3pm.

Community Recreation Adviser Ollie Clifton says new faces are always welcome: “It’s a friendly group who have a lot of fun enjoying all the things the club organises. Whatever your walk of life, just turn up at 1pm any Wednesday and you’ll be made to feel very welcome. There’s always something different on offer.”

Activities planned for the next couple of months include a barbecue lunch at The Groynes, Tai Chi, lively musical entertainment, Housie just for fun, and a mystery trip.  The club has a nominal weekly fee of $3 which includes afternoon tea. There are sometimes additional costs for trips and visits during the year.

Shirley Leisure Club is coordinated by Christchurch City Council’s Community and Recreation team. Transport to Shirley Community Centre may be possible for people with transport difficulties.

For a programme or to find out more about the club, call Community Recreation Advisor, Ollie Clifton, on 941 5409 or visit www.ccc.govt.nz/recreation/olderadults/shirley.asp
