Council to see future vision for QEII Park

Christchurch City Council will consider a new report proposing guidelines for the future shape of QEII Park at their meeting on Thursday 28 April.

The draft QEII Park concept plan is designed to provide a framework for the future direction of QEII Park over the coming years, including defining areas of possible future building, and recognising the main open green spaces of the Park.

 The plan will also propose setting aside a larger area for community activities, and improving the traffic flow around the Park while giving greater focus to cyclists, pedestrians and public transport. The concept plan will set out a vision for QEII Park designed to firmly establish the Park as ‘Canterbury’s ultimate multi-dimensional sport, recreation, leisure and event place, enhancing the community’s health and well-being.’

 Project leader Paul Cottam says the plan is about putting measures in place to protect the character of the Park when the Council is faced with decisions about its use in the future. “Rather than setting out specific plans for what will happen in the Park, the plan is designed to allow for what and where certain types of activities could happen so that the Council can make sound and sustainable decisions when it needs to.” “For example, if the Council is approached by someone wanting to set up a new sports facility or activity at QEII Park, it will be able to refer to the concept plan to ensure the proposal fits with the overall vision and framework agreed for the Park,” he says.

The draft concept plan will be published in late May, when the Council wants to hear views and comments from across the city - from people who use the Park, people who live near it, and anyone who wants to have their say on its future direction.
