Launch to celebrate Christchurch Road Safety Strategy

24 September 2004

The completion of the Christchurch Road Safety Strategy which maps the future direction for road safety planning in Canterbury, will be celebrated at a launch on Monday, 27 September, at the Christchurch City Council civic offices.

The strategy addresses road safety issues using a four-pronged approach of education, enforcement, engineering and encouragement.

“The great joy of developing this strategy was the interest from the community, and contributions from individuals and organisations, helping to make Christchurch roads safer,” says Christchurch Road Safety Co-ordinator, Susan Cambridge.

Developed by the Christchurch Road Safety Coordinating Committee and City Council over 12 months of workshops, focus groups and community consultation, the strategy aims to reduce and ultimately stop road-crash injuries on Christchurch roads in the future.

The committee membership includes the Council and other major road safety bodies such as the Ministry of Transport, Land Transport Safety Authority, Police and the Automobile Association, to name a few.
