Carparks to relieve residential street congestion

23 September 2004

The Christchurch City Council plans to build 45 new 90-degree carparks outside the Christchurch College of Education along Solway Avenue to help relieve parking congestion in nearby streets.

Work will start in early 2005 to increase the number of carparks along the east side of Solway Avenue between Dalrye Place and Parkstone Avenue, similar to that along Dovedale Avenue. The existing  footpath and kerb and channel will be retained, with new kerb build-outs at the Solway Avenue entrance to the College and Solway Avenue/Parkstone Avenue intersection.

Council consultation leader Hamish Peacock, says the work follows many months of consultation with neighbouring residents.  Feedback indicated both support and opposition for the planned work but, on balance, the Community Board approved the project for the wider good of the community.

Mr Peacock said that the College of Education had fulfilled its obligations under the City Plan to provide as many onsite carparks as required and the Council could not force the College to build any more.
