Term 4 gentle exercise and Tai Chi courses open for enrolments
22 September 2004
Christchurch City Council is now taking enrolments for its term four gentle exercise and simplified Tai Chi classes, which start in five locations around the city in the week of 4 October.
A city of healthy and active people is one of the City Council’s top-line goals. Called Community Outcomes, these are set out in the Our Community Plan 2004-14 document. How often we exercise is a key indicator of general health.
Gentle Exercise is a fun, social exercise class set to music for older adults or people with limited mobility. You can do it standing or sitting, and at your own pace. The trained physical activity tutors who take the classes say people’s mobility, balance, coordination and circulation all improve as a result of taking these classes.
All the Gentle Exercise classes run from 1.30pm, cost $3 a time and tea or coffee is free. They are being held in Halswell (Mondays from 4 October, at the Halswell Baptist Church, 6 Balcairn Street), Burnside (Tuesdays from 5 October at Burnside Elim Church, 193 Grahams Road) and Opawa (Wednesdays from 6 October at the St Marks Anglican Church, 100 Opawa Road).
The Tai Chi classes provide another excellent way to start exercising. Tai Chi also helps improve balance, coordination and circulation.
These classes are being held in the community centres at Bishopdale on Thursday afternoons from 7 October and Fendalton on Mondays from 4 October. The 10-week courses cost $50.
The Bishopdale Community Centre, in the mall at 129 Farrington Street, has a beginner class at 2pm and an intermediate class at 3pm. The Fendalton Community Centre, at 170 Clyde Road, is offering a class at 5.30pm.
