Feel great this summer – sign up for Pilates classes

22 September 2004

The City Council is now taking bookings for its Term Four introductory mat pilates courses. The 10-week courses cost $50 and enrolments are essential. Sign up now for pilates; your body will love you for it.

To enrol or ask for a full pilates timetable or other information, please call the Christchurch City Council Community and Recreation Unit on 941 8383.

Pilates (pronounced  Pi-lah-tees) leaves you feeling refreshed and alert, with a sense of physical and mental well being. The Pilates method involves progressive exercises -- deep stretching and controlled resistance movements using the abdominal muscles as the powerhouse of the body.

Regardless of fitness level, everyone can benefit from this form of exercise. Benefits include improved posture and a strengthened lower back, buttocks and abdomen. Pilates engages your body and mind, improves flexibility and strengthens the entire body.

A city of healthy and active people is one of the City Council’s top-line goals. Called Community Outcomes, these are set out in the Our Community Plan 2004-14 document. How often we exercise is a key indicator of general health.
