Public helps Council plan future for Hagley Park/Botanic Gardens

22 October 2004

A total of 302 formal submissions were received during the Christchurch City Council’s consultation on issues affecting Hagley Park and the Botanic Gardens.

Public meetings gave people a chance to have their opinions heard during the consultation period between 6 August and 8 October. About 150 primary and secondary school pupils also made informal submissions on the future of the Park and Gardens.

The purpose of the consultation was for the public to contribute to the Council’s development of a long-term master plan for the Botanic Gardens and review of the Hagley Park Management Plan.  Issues raised included the location and content of a new visitors centre for the Gardens.  This year, the Council set aside a total of $10.36 million to make improvements at the Gardens including the construction of a new visitors centre, staff facilities and greenhouses.

Submissions are now being analysed and will be considered in the production of the Gardens master plan and revised Hagley Park Management Plan.  Drafts of the plans (including a design and location for the visitors centre) will be made available for public comment in mid 2005.
