Carole Evans is Christchurch City’s new Deputy Mayor

Christchurch Mayor Garry Moore today named Councillor Carole Evans as Deputy Mayor.

“I’ve enjoyed hugely working with Lesley Keast as deputy in the last two Council terms and I’m equally looking forward to working with Carole Evans,” Mr Moore says. “With the smaller Council and the plans we have to change the way we do business, her role is an important one and I’m confident she’ll be a big asset to the city as Deputy Mayor.”

By tradition, it is the Mayor’s prerogative to choose a deputy. He and the 12 city councillors met this morning to discuss the post and its responsibilities over the next three years. A straw poll had been taken recently which Mr Moore says was “pretty conclusive”.

Carole Evans is a Justice of the Peace and was awarded the Queen’s Service Order for public service in 1998.  She was first elected to the old city council in 1986 and served on the Christchurch Transport Board from 1980-1986.

She says she wasn’t at all confident of getting the job. “I’m the shortest, the oldest, the longest-serving and I’m a woman, so I thought I’d better have my name in there, but I wasn’t confident at all,” she says. “I’m absolutely delighted to have been chosen.

“I want to work closely with the other councillors and I think that’s part of the reason I was selected. I’m a nurturer and look to help people. I want us to have a strong Council that the city can feel proud of. The way to achieve that is by making good leadership decisions.”
