Christchurch City Library competition winner to fly high over Hanmer

6 October 2004

Papanui resident Joyce McMillan is “absolutely delighted’ to win Christchurch City Libraries’ recent Window to the World competition.

Joyce’s prize includes accommodation and breakfast at the Hanmer Heritage Hotel, entry to the hot pools and a scenic flight with Hanmer Air. “I’m taking my sister with me,” says Joyce. “She has very limited sight and I thought she may not be interested in the flight but she’s told me she loves flying and will still very much enjoy the experience.”

More than 3000 library members took part in the competition. Each was given a passport which was stamped each time they borrowed an item -- a book, a CD or DVD and a magazine.

“The competition was a great way for our members to discover the wide range of resources we have available,” says Sue Sutherland, Christchurch City Libraries Manager. “It was especially interesting to find our winner, Joyce McMillan, used to work in the Library in the war years.”

Joyce was a student at Avonside Girls’ High School in 1941 when she volunteered for a temporary job at the Library, relieving for a staff member who had gone to war. “I was told that if the war ended tomorrow and he came back, I’d be out of a job,” says Joyce.

Today, Joyce is a regular Mobile Library user and borrows resources for herself and an elderly friend who can’t get up the bus steps. Once a fortnight, they venture out to the new South Library for a coffee and a chat.
