2004 Civic Awards celebrate behind the scenes contributions

23 November 2004

Twenty-eight of Christchurch’s most community minded citizens will receive official recognition of their work at the 2004 Civic Awards ceremony at the Christchurch Town Hall on Wednesday 24 November.

“The recipients of this year’s awards are a wonderfully diverse group, involved in everything from the ZooDoo Project and local chess to entertaining the elderly and fostering young people.  It’s a celebration of all the essential work that goes on behind the scenes in Christchurch that we too often take for granted,” Christchurch City Council City Promotions co-ordinator, Julie Battersby said.

Christchurch Mayor Garry Moore will be at the awards ceremony to present each of the recipients with a framed award certificate and boxed medallion.

Civic Awards are presented annually by the Council in recognition of voluntary service that benefits the city of Christchurch and its people.  This service can be in a number of areas including recreation; youth activities; social welfare; educational services; cultural, religious and community affairs.

Nominations for this year’s Civic Awards were called for in July and considered by the former Council's Community Services Committee, prior to Council endorsement in September.
