Traffic restrictions in central city on Saturday

7 May 2004

Traffic will be restricted in areas of the central city on Saturday 8 May during the “Say No to Racism” march and rally.

The march will leave from the Rolleston Avenue end of the Arts Centre at 11am and head down Worcester Boulevard to Cathedral Square, where the rally will be held.

Worcester Boulevard will be officially closed to all traffic from 11am to noon and parking will not be permitted during this time.

Parking will also be restricted in Cathedral Square and along parts of Rolleston Avenue both before and during the march.

Kay Hazlett-Brown from the Christchurch City Council’s Transport Unit says that although the official road closure along Worcester Boulevard starts at 11am, motorists need to be aware that there could be delays from around 10am onwards.

People wishing to enter Cathedral Square on Saturday also need to plan their route carefully because of the road works that are being carried out, she says.

“The road behind the cathedral (from Worcester Street to Colombo Street north) will be fenced off for road works. There will be no access for vehicles, and limited pedestrian access, to the road in this area.”

For more information contact Kay Hazlett-Brown on 941 5228 or 027-221-3722.
