The Bog Big Band brings a bit of Blarney to Cathedral Square for St Patrick’s Day.

11 March 2004

Free Friday Lunchtime Concert, Friday March 12th , 12.15pm to 1.45pm, Cathedral Square.

Beannachtai na feile Padraig oraibh! Or as we would more commonly say:
"Happy St Patrick’s Day to you all!’

This Friday, Cathedral Square comes alive with the sounds of The Bog Big Band, playing traditional Irish tunes and sing along songs from 12.15pm to 1.45pm.

A collective from various past Irish Bands that have played in the Christchurch area, The Bog Big Band includes Ian Costello from Bushfire and the Black Velvet Band, Brendan Gregg from the Finnegans and Granddad’s Axe, Philip King and Bob Jemmett from The Beggarmen, plus various other players.

Brendan Gregg, who has himself recorded over 6 albums for international release, guesses that the band represents over 30 years of Irish Music tradition in Christchurch. "We started gathering together every Tuesday in 2001 driven by a love for Irish music and a desire to keep the tradition alive by giving people of all ages a chance to come and play along and to learn."

Instruments in the band include banjo, mandolin, accordion, fiddle, bouzouki, guitar and tin whistle, and the band play a regular gig at The Bog Irish Bar in Cashel Mall, where they have appeared with the Irish Rovers and The Pogues.
