Council proposes changes for retail activity citywide

4 March 2004

The Christchurch City Council is introducing changes to its City Plan to better manage the distribution of business activity citywide, especially proposed retail development.

The changes would help Council assess the effects that proposed large-scale  retail development may have on existing central city and suburban shopping centres, around which transport routes and residential housing are already planned.

The changes are known as the “Retail Variation” or Draft Variation 86 – Retail Distribution. The draft Retail Variation is being prepared and is open for public comment.

This is the public’s chance to comment on the draft Retail Variation informally before it is publicly notified. Once publicly notified, people can still make submissions but through the more formal legal process governed by the Resource Management Act 1991.

To have a say on how retail developments should be treated in future, email retail.variation@ccc.govt.nz or visit the Council Retail Variation site on www.ccc.govt.nz/HaveYourSay/Retail/Variation to make a submission and get more information.
