Survey of residents in new subdivisions

23 January 2004

The Council is holding a survey on the design and development of new subdivisions because it recognises how important it is to provide a high quality of life in urban areas where people live, work and play.

The survey - aimed at people who bought in areas where rural land was zoned residential since 1995 - is being sent today to residents of the larger new subdivisions, for completion by 13 February.

Its purpose is to find out from these residents why they chose sections and/or houses in a particular location and what features or qualities attracted them to a particular subdivision.

The Council is trying to identify through the survey, how it can help developers create better quality living environments, rather than identify new subdivisions that residents considered poor quality.

The information will also help the Council review its policy and rules on new subdivisions and development to better serve future communities, as well as develop design guides to encourage more sustainable design of sections and houses.

The survey includes generic questions relating to residents’ previous houses; how and why they selected their location, subdivision, section and house, and how they feel about the effect of public and private redevelopment controls on their use and enjoyment of their properties and overall subdivision quality.

The survey results are likely to be available in late April 2004.
