Coastal Park Plan open for public comment

It’s time for the public to have their say on a draft plan for the proposed Awaroa/Godley Head Coastal Park – a Christchurch City Council and Department of Conservation  concept.

The proposal is for a coastal park at the eastern end of the  Port Hills, covering the area from Evans Pass and Sumner out to Godley Head.  The Department of Conservation and Christchurch City Council administer most of the area for public use.

According to Christchurch City Council Parks and Waterways planner Derek Roozen, the proposed park would be both an ecological safehaven and natural recreation area for the city.   He said “this section of the Port Hills is important for a number of historical, cultural and ecological reasons, as well as for its fantastic landscape of bays, headlands, rocky slopes and valleys”

The draft plan for the Awaroa/Godley Head Coastal Park can be viewed at Civic Offices, Tuam St; Department of Conservation, 133 Victoria St; Council service centres; public libraries; and on the website:  www.ccc.govt.nz/HaveYourSay.  Submissions can be made online or by writing to Awaroa/Godley Head Coastal Park development concept, Parks and Waterways Unit, Christchurch City Council, P.O.Box 237, Christchurch.  Submissions close on 5pm, 12 March 2004.
