Cultural Taste for Lunchtime
27 February 2004
Christchurch City Council Community Services is staging a fantastic cultural extravaganza during the lunch hour on Friday 5th March in Cathedral Square.
The lunchtime concert is promoting some of the groups who will be performing at Culture Galore! 2004 at Ray Blank Park, Maidstone Road on Saturday 6th March from 12-4pm. This is a free event which aims to feature and celebrate the variety and diversity of cultures living in Christchurch.
The groups performing during the lunchtime concert include Bellydancing, Indian, Zimbabwean and Chinese.
Gendi Tanner is the manager of the Christchurch School of Contemporary Bellydance. Gendi runs daily classes for people wishing to learn the art of bellydancing. Gendi will perform a beautiful Egyptian oriental style of belly dance which is popular entertainment in Egypt.
The Zimbabwean Society’s performance group is known as Mafikizolo and it’s members come from the Zimbabwean community. The aim of the group is to promote African culture in dance and music, both traditional and modern dances. The group has been performing together for one year and participated at the ‘Drums of Africa’ event in October 2003.
Shweta Nand is performing on behalf of the Christchurch Fiji Indian Cultural Education, Social and Sports Association. Shweta has been performing since she was 5 years old and has performed at Culture Galore for the past 3 years, plus many other cultural events including "Many Voices", and the Body Global festival. Shweta will perform a mixture of traditional and contemporary dances to Indian music.
