Funding available for local Neighbourhood Week events
30 August 2004
Some funding is available from the Christchurch City Council’s community boards for residents keen to hold small-scale neighbourhood events during Neighbourhood Week.
The weeklong celebration, now in its seventh year, is being held from Saturday 30 October until Friday 5 November.
Christchurch City Council assistant community adviser Tanya Ewins says the week is about getting to know the people who live close to you and building stronger, safer communities.
“It’s about saying hi to your neighbours, inviting them in for a cuppa if you can, or if you’re really keen hosting a local gathering. It might be as simple as sharing a cup of coffee or stopping to say hello,” she says.
Past events that people have organised include street barbecues and parties, shared dinners, working bees, Halloween parties, family fun days, fairs and galas and neighbourhood planting days.
Anybody interested in applying for funding to help organise an event should contact their local City Council service centre for application details and closing dates.
One event to watch out for during Neighbourhood Week is Children’s Day at the Groynes being held from 11am – 4pm on Sunday 31 October. This free, annual event features a full on day of entertainment and activities for kids.
City Council service centres have details about what events are being held in local areas.
