Candidates for CCC, community boards announced

20 August 2004

Ten candidates are in the running for Christchurch’s mayoralty, 41 people are standing for the city council’s dozen seats and there are 66 nominations for the 30 available places on the city’s six community boards.
At the last elections, in 2001, 14 people contested the mayoralty, 58 candidates were in the running for the 24 city council seats and 68 people lined up for the 36 available places on the city’s six community boards.
However, the next term of local government will see Christchurch represented by a city council of 12 councillors and similarly slimmer community boards – down from six elected members each to five.
The local government and district health board elections in Christchurch are conducted by postal ballot. Voters should receive their ballot papers in the week of 20 September. They have to post them back before Election Day, Saturday 9 October, with voting closing at midday. Vote counting begins immediately and provisional results will be available as soon as practicable afterwards.

A full list of candidates will be available from the middle of next week (25 August) on the council's elections webpage
