Consultation closing soon on Council’s new draft community plan

Public consultation on the Christchurch City Council’s draft community plan, Our Community Plan Christchurch O-Tautahi, closes at 5pm next Thursday, 6 May.

Our Community Plan Christchurch O-Tautahi was released for public comment on 5 April. 57 submissions have been received from the public so far.

Topics covered in the submissions received range from big ticket items in the draft plan, like the proposed flat water rowing facility and the kerbside collection of kitchen waste, to a suggestion for part of New Brighton Beach to be designated for nude swimming, and another for an aquajogging lap pool at Jellie Park.

Nearly a quarter of the submissions include feedback or suggestions relating to the city’s streets and transport, including comment on the proposed metropolitan transport strategy and suggestions for improvements to pedestrian crossings and to intersections.

If adopted by Christchurch City Council in June, the final community plan would result in a rate increase of 3.26 per cent.

Background

Under the Local Government Act 2002, all Councils are required to produce a ten-year Long Term Council Community Plan (LTCCP). It must include a set of outcomes, which describe what sort of community Christchurch wants to be, and list the activities that the Council will undertake to contribute towards achieving those outcomes. This year’s Our Community Plan Christchurch O-Tautahi is Christchurch City Council’s first response to the Act’s requirement.

Our Community Plan Christchurch O-Tautahi includes the Council’s annual financial plan and programme for this financial year, and projected financial data for the following nine years.

Printed copies of Our Community Plan Christchurch O-Tautahi are now available from Christchurch City Council services centres, Christchurch City Libraries network, Our City O-Tautahi and from the main Civic Offices at 163-173 Tuam Street. The draft community plan and submission forms are also available through the CCC website at www.ccc.govt.nz/ourcommunityplan

The Council will meet to adopt the final community plan on 30 June.
