Matecito Latin Band joins Street Latin Dancers in Cathedral Square
8 April 2004
Arriba! Arriba! Cathedral Square will come alive next Friday lunchtime (16 April) to the Latin sounds of the Matecito Latin Band and the Latin moves of Street Latin Dance Studio Dancers, performing free from 12.15pm until 1.15pm.
Metecito Latin Band is led by Gerardo Torres, lead singer and percussion specialist. Gerardo has many years’ experience bringing ever popular Latin sounds to Christchurch. Playing salsa, merengue, and samba gets the crowd moving, he says.
“Matecito Latin Band plays a very high and energetic authentic music. Just watching the band, you won’t be able to stay quiet."
The Matecito Latin Band was formed by Gerardo after he returned to New Zealand from his homeland of Peru in 2000. Before emigrating to NZ, Gerardo was a professional singer and entertainer in Peru, working for more than 20 years with some of the best international Latin and Salsa bands. He has performed in front of many of Peru's presidents and diplomats.
Gerardo is joined by Wally T on drums; Merrin Buchan, Fatima and Karen Frood on vocals; and for this show, members of the Street Latin Dance Studio Dancers.
A new studio in Christchurch, Street Latin Dance Studio specializes in teaching Salsa, Merengue, Cha Cha, and techniques such as Puerto Rican, Cuban and New York style.
Next Friday, ‘Arriba la Musica Latina!’
