Shirley/Papanui Board offers funding for Neighbourhood Week events

17 September 2003

The Shirley/Papanui Community Board has funding available for local residents, keen to hold an event during Neighbourhood Week (1-7 November, 2003).

Sheryl Killick, Christchurch City Council assistant community adviser says past events that people have organised include barbecues, street parties, shared dinners, working bees, family fun days, neighbourhood planting days, morning teas and community walks.

“The idea of the week is to encourage people to meet their neighbours, promote informal contact with other people in the neighbourhood and foster a stronger, safer community. People are encouraged to say hi to their neighbours, invite them in for a cuppa if they can, or if they’re really keen host a local gathering.”

Sheryl says that several Neighbourhood Support Groups have been established as a result of neighbours getting together during Neighbourhood Week. Pat Creasey, Co-ordinator of Canterbury Neighbourhood Support, is available to speak to interested groups and can be contacted on 372-8007 or email canterburyns@paradise.net.nz.

Applications for funding should be addressed to the Assistant Community Adviser, Papanui Service Centre, P O Box 5142, Papanui. They should include an outline of the event, with the date, time, costs, amount requested and an estimate of the number of people who may attend. Applications close on Friday 10 October, 5pm.

For more information contact Sheryl Killick, Assistant Community Adviser, 941-5410 email: sheryl.killick@ccc.govt.nz or call in at the Papanui Service Centre, Cnr Langdons & Restell Street, Papanui.
