Linwood LYFE Festival, the youth event of the year

28 October 2003

A massive mixture of local music will fill the airwaves on Sunday 2 November, when the sixth Linwood Youth Festival Experience explodes on to Linwood Park.

FUSA, Pacific Underground, Vivaldi Junior, Polycarp, Rakatahi, Falter, Cornerstone, kapa haka groups, a Samoan cultural group and a Barbershop ensemble will give festival goers the total Linwood youth experience from 11am until 4pm.

For anyone not familiar with these groups, that means a feast of hip hop, R&B, reggae, acoustic classical music and rock, along with traditional and contemporary sounds of Aotearoa and the Pacific.

Surrounding centre stage, will be a mosaic of ethnic food stalls to tantalise your tastebuds

However, maxing and relaxing will not be the only option at L.Y.F.E. There will be heaps of action and have a go activities including skating and breaking competitions, giant games, a water slide, sumo suits, an Olympic wrestling demo, touch rugby and too much more to mention!

Plus, you can try a range of arty things such as wearable art, hairbraiding, face painting, circus tricks and stone carving.

Community groups and organisations that support youth growth and development will be at the event, including the Youth Workers Collective, Diverse café, Linwood Resource Centre and others.

Core funded by the Hagley/Ferrymead Community Board, LYFE has been organised by a hard working crew of Linwood youth and supportive agencies, says Diana Saxton, a Christchurch City Council community recreation advisor. “We all agree that this year’s festival will be the youth event of the year.”

“We invite youth, family, whanau and friends to join us for an experience that will last a L.Y.F.E time, ” she says.
