Council to consult on proposed gaming and TAB policies
7 November 2003
Christchurch City Council will seek feedback from the community on the
proposed Class 4 Gaming Venue and TAB policies.
The Council’s Regulatory and Consents Committee agreed today that
both the class 4 gaming venue and TAB proposed policies will be presented
at the Council’s meeting on 20 November. Public consultation on the
proposed policies will take place from 24 November until 5 February 2004.
The Council’s development of the proposed policies responds to the
Gambling Act 2003, which came into force on 18 September 2003. The Act places
a requirement on the Council to introduce a policy on class 4 venues and
a policy on TAB venues by 18 March 2004. It also requires the Council to
undertake a special consultative procedure, including releasing the proposed
policies for public inspection and providing the opportunity for the public
to make submissions and be heard by the Council.
The proposed policies will specify whether or not class 4 gaming and new
TAB venues may be established in Christchurch and, if so, where they may
be located. It may also specify any restrictions on the maximum number of
gaming machines that may be operated at class 4 and TAB venues.
In adopting any policy the Council is obliged to have regard to the social
impact of gambling within Christchurch.
