Community Board moves to New Brighton
26 May 2003
The Burwood/Pegasus
Community Board will officially open its new boardroom
in New Brighton on Monday 26 May 2003.
“The Community Board is delighted to find a home in New Brighton.
Exciting plans for the revitalisation of New Brighton are in place and the
Board’s presence is a positive injection of faith in the future of
the area, ” Community Board chairperson Don Rowlands says.
“A
centrally located boardroom also makes the Board more accessible to Burwood/Pegasus
residents and community groups.”
There has already been a favourable response to the new boardroom. Janet
Begg, a regular attendee at Board meetings says the shop window
frontage on the boardroom, “gives the general public a great view of democracy
in action, right there in our precinct. ”
The Community Board vacated its boardroom at the Shirley Service Centre
in August 2001 to provide additional space for the Council’s area
staff. Since then meetings have been held at the Ascot Community
Centre and more recently at the Linwood Service Centre.
A brief opening
ceremony will be held at 4pm on Monday, prior to the Board’s
scheduled meeting. The new boardroom is on the corner of Beresford
and Union Streets, New Brighton in the former post office building.
Two
formal Board meetings will be held at the boardroom each month.
These meetings are open to the public.
The Board regularly hears
deputations from residents and residents’ groups
on matters of local interest or concern. It is able to make certain
decisions within the authority delegated by the Council or to make
recommendations to Council standing committees or the full Council.
The boardroom
will also be used for informal meetings of the Board and
meetings of the New Brighton Taskforce. Discussions are being held
with other potential users such as the New Brighton Residents’ Association,
the New Brighton and Districts Historical Group and the New Brighton
Pier and Foreshore Promotion Society.
