Opening of redesigned Kiosk Footbridge

13 March 2003

The remodelled kiosk footbridge, which leads to the Botanic Gardens from the Armagh Street carpark, will be officially opened by Councillor Carole Anderton at 8.00am on Friday 14 March.

The bridge has been widened and flattened out by building over the existing 1960’s structure. Parks and Waterways Manager Anne Greenup says that the old bridge was too narrow to carry the thousands of people who use it each week, and too steep for many. “The new bridge is twice as wide, with a more gentle slope. Visitors to the Gardens can now stand at the handrails looking up and down the river, leaving space for others to pass.”

Terracotta coloured aluminium sheets cover the sides of the bridge, with cutouts of ivy leaves and branches. The same motif is also used in the metalwork of the new gates at the Botanic Gardens end.

The bridge was designed and built over six months by City Solutions and Hopkins Engineering. Lighting was incorporated into the design to shine into water and show up the decorative work at night.
