Official signing seals funding for Aranui community

20 June 2003

An official signing of the Stronger Communities Action Fund (SCAF) agreement between the Aranui Community Trust, Christchurch City Council and Child Youth and Family Services will be held next Friday, June 27.

The agreement will be signed by the Minister of Social Services and Employment, Ruth Dyson; Aranui Community Trust chairman, Rob Davidson; Christchurch mayor, Garry Moore and Social Work and Community Services general manager, Ken Rand.

The signing will seal an annual government grant of $213,000 for the next four years for the Aranui Community Trust. This funding will be used for community advancement projects, some of which have already been identified through Aranui Community Renewal – a partnership between the Aranui Community Trust, Christchurch City Council and Housing NZ Corporation.

Pastor Pere Matenga will open Friday’s event at the Wainoni Aranui Family Centre with a karakia and welcome at 2.30 pm. Signatories to the funding agreement will then speak briefly and the official signing will be at 3pm.

Everyone in the Aranui community is invited to the event, which will also be attended by Christchurch East MP Lianne Dalziel, Christchurch City Councillors, Community Board members and representatives from various community organisations.

Aranui and Wairoa are the latest communities to benefit from SCAF. Seven other communities including South Hokianga, Glenn Innes, Ranui (Waitakere), Whakatane, Mangakino, Porirua and Awarua (Bluff) are already part of the pilot programme, which began in 2000, and works to empower communities to identify social needs and provide targeted social services.
