Road changes around Northlands area finalised
30 July 2003
The Christchurch City Council has finalised plans for changes to the roads
in the Northlands area to improve safety and access for road users.
The Christchurch City Council received more than 70 written responses
and several verbal responses on the proposed developments, which
were presented in a report to the Council’s Sustainable Transport and Utilities Committee,
and full Council, at their April meetings.
City Council capital programme team leader Alix Newman says that
while some of the changes are fixed by the conditions attached
to the redevelopment of Northlands Shopping Centre, some significant
decisions have been made
as a result of feedback from the public.
These include:
Langdons Road (Railway to Main North Road)
- The proposal for a Free Left Turn onto Main North Road for
vehicles on Langdons Road has been rejected. The intersection
remains completely
signalised, in particular for the benefit of the vision impaired.
- The proposal for a Right Turn Arrow has been rejected due to
difficulties it would inflict on general traffic movements. However, the
new Sisson Drive
and parking buildings will change traffic movements. After
the traffic has “settled
down” for a while, the intersection will be reassessed and consideration
given to a turn arrow.
Main North Road (Langdons Road to Sawyers Arm Road)
- The proposal for shortening the median south of Procter
Street has been rejected. Its separating function is important
to traffic safety
on the road.
- The bus stop outside No. 50 Main North Road (just south
of Proctor Street) and outside No. 72 Main North Road (40m south
of Halliwell Avenue)
will be relocated to outside Nos. 54 and 56 Main North
Road (just north of Proctor Street) and bus shelters provided
for passengers.
- Traffic signals will be installed at the new entrance to
the mall at Halliwell Avenue intersection. Halliwell Avenue will
also be clearly
marked as a No-Exit street.
Sawyers Arms Road (from Main North Road to the Railway)
- Installation of an additional parking bay, which can
accommodate three more car parks, at the eastern
end of Sawyers Arms
on the south side of the road, as well as the
retention of two more spaces on the opposite
side of the street.
- The pedestrian crossing on the south side of the
signalised intersection will be retained.
The work is due for completion by the end of November. Detailed maps showing the changes will be on display at the Council’s
Papanui Service Centre (cnr Langdons Road and Restell Street) and Northlands
Shopping Centre from Wednesday 30 July.
