New Management Plan for Solid and Hazardous Waste

27 January 2003

The Council is seeking public comment on the new draft Waste Management Plan for Solid and Hazardous Waste for Christchurch.

A primary focus of the plan, which replaces the 1988 waste management plan amended in 2001, will be to remove organic matter from the waste stream and use it beneficially. There is also an emphasis on cooperation between the ten Canterbury councils, signalling a strong regional commitment to waste planning.

New proposals include the licensing of clean fill sites and waste carriers, and the “Waster Pays’ concept whereby residents will pay for black rubbish bags independently of their rates in an effort by the Council to encourage waste minimisation.

Resource Planner Zefanja Potgieter says that the Council wants to find out whether the community agrees with the draft proposals for dealing with waste.

Copies of the plan are available from Civic Offices in Tuam Street, Council service centres, refuse stations or see www.ccc.govt.nz/waste.

Written submissions can be made electronically on the Council’s Have your Say web page or posted to Zefanja Potgieter, Christchurch City Council, P O Box 237, Christchurch. Submissions close at 4pm on Friday 14 February 2003.

Further information: Zefanja Potgieter. Tel: 941-8271.
