Dr Sanchez Prescribing Latin Sounds in Cathedral Square

29 January 2003

FREE Friday Lunchtime Concert in Cathedral Square, Friday January 31st, 12.15 to 1.45pm

Fresh and contemporary Latin sounds will play out in Cathedral Square this Friday lunchtime when Dr Sanchez performs as part of the SummerTimes™ Free Friday Lunchtime Concert Series produced by Christchurch City Council Leisure.

Ryan Hanna is Dr Sanchez, and five years ago he was playing in a rock band in Australia when he met and became influenced musically by an interesting group of South American musicians.

‘I just love the sound and the sensuality of it all’ he says. " I’d love to go to Peru and Cuba one day, and sit with the older, infamous musicians and listen and learn.’

Producing music evocative of ‘The Buena Vista Social Club’ Dr Sanchez adds a contemporary edge with his original compositions, making up about half of the show.

Ryan sees a resurgence of interest in Latin music, probably due to the popularity of artists such as Ricki Martin and the revival of Santana.

He has been playing with Auckland combo ‘Vox Nova’ over the last few months, in Viaduct venues and onboard yachts.

"It’s been fantastic!" He says. " The atmosphere is electric, especially when dancers join in. We recently had a Samba dance group attend our show and their style is so different to our usual way of dancing in New Zealand - it’s a provocative way for people to connect."

He plans to bring his popular sound to the masses. ‘I’d like to produce a solo album later this year, and although Auckland seemed barren musically about 8 years ago, this has really changed. There’s now such a cosmopolitan air to the place that my music fits in very well."
