Youth advocate praises new TV programme

17 February 2003

The Hub – a new youth based regional television programme has attracted praise and funding from the Christchurch City Council.

The Council’s youth advocate, Robyn Moore says $6,000 was awarded from her budget to help CTV get the programme started. “ It fits absolutely with our aims for positive publicity for youth,” she says.

“All too often we focus on the negative behaviours of a very small sector of the youth population. This initiative provides an opportunity for us to focus on the positive majority and see exactly how young people are contributing to the vibrancy of Christchurch”.

The new magazine style programme for 15 –27 year olds starts tomorrow, 18 February. Each week, it will focus on talented young people with specific skills, whether it be in music, academia, sport, theatre, film, community service...

“Our aim is to inspire and encourage young people through the experience of their peers and role models,” Simon Green, The Hub’s creative director says. “ We want to encourage them to set goals by showing them other young New Zealanders who are trying to achieve theirs.”

The Hub’s presenters are Candice Bowen, a second year journalism student at the New Zealand Broadcasting School; Nick Prince, who has a background in modelling and acting and Simon Green who has recently completed his NZBS degree.

“Through The Hub, we are hoping to provide insight into potential careers, charities and events, as well as access to experienced mentors. Overall we want to offer an alternative positive television experience for young people,” Simon says.

The presenters will help to publicise the programme and make it more interactive by visiting secondary schools and other learning institutions.

The Hub will screen on CTV on Tuesdays at 8pm, Wednesdays at 1pm and Sundays at 5pm. It will also be shown on regional television stations, operating from Warkworth, Auckland, Waikato, Taranaki, Nelson, Dunedin and Invercargill.

The programme is being sponsored by Lifesavers (Nestle) and co-sponsored by Christchurch City Council Youth Advocacy and The Edge.
