Gardens beside Mona Vale deserve praise - Councillor Anderton

19 February 2003

The private gardens which back onto Mona Vale are beautiful and their owners deserve praise, says Christchurch City Councillor Carole Anderton, chair of the Council’s Parks, Gardens and Waterways Committee.

"Mona Vale is the second jewel in our Garden City crown, behind the Christchurch Botanic Gardens," says Cr Anderton. "It draws huge numbers of visitors every day and the work put into those private gardens which back onto it and which can be seen by people as they walk in from Fendalton Road is remarkable.
"The city I think is very lucky that those owners allow us to share their gardens and the people of Christchurch should be proud of the way those people are maintaining them."

Mona Vale, off Fendalton Road to the north west of Hagley Park, is an historic Victorian homestead surrounded by English style gardens. It was part of the Deans estate, one of Christchurch’s first settler families, with the house and garden dating from 1899. The property passed into City Council ownership in the late 1960s, with help from the public of Christchurch in raising funds for the purchase. The Avon, Wairarapa and Waimairi watercourses join within its grounds.
