Final Fundraising Event for the New Gallery

With just over three months remaining until its official opening, Canterbury people are invited to the last major fundraising event for the new Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu, with the opportunity to bid on some exclusive preview packages.

The event, to be held at the Centre of Contemporary Art on Thursday 20 February, will offer 50 selected art works by leading New Zealand artists for auction, as well as a special auction for the Gallery admission packages. Funds raised from the auction will support both institutions.

More than $15.2 million has been raised by the public fundraising campaign for the new Gallery, including over $1.2 million raised by the Community Gifts Fundraising Committee, which organised the event in association with CoCA.

The art works include pieces by Grahame Sydney, Bill Hammond, Neil Dawson, Margaret Stoddart, Dick Frizzell, Peter Robinson, Ralph Hotere and W.A. Sutton.

In addition, four special opportunities to gain unique access to the new Gallery are to be auctioned, including dinner for two at the Gallery restaurant, Alchemy Café and Wine Bar, tickets to the annual Founder Donors dinner - an exclusive event to be held in the Gallery before the opening - and a personal tour through the Gallery, prior to opening, guided by Gallery Director Tony Preston.

The Art Auction will take place from 6pm Thursday 20 February 2003 at The Centre of Contemporary Art, 66 Gloucester Street Christchurch. The works to be auctioned are available for viewing from 14 - 20 February.
