Big turnout predicted for Cathedral Square party

Wednesday 31 December 2003

More than 10,000 people are expected in Cathedral Square tonight for the Anthony Harper Lawyers NY Eve Party.

Christchurch City Council events co-ordinator Eugene O’Connell said that given today’s good weather, the crowd at the family focussed event is expected to be even bigger than last year.

Two live bands, 4 Man Bob and The Bubblemen, will play up to the midnight countdown. At midnight, fireworks will be let off from the roof of the Anthony Harper Lawyers Building; the Cathedral bells will toll; and chimes will ring out from the Square’s Post Office clock.

“Like previous years, we are doing everything we can to ensure that there will be a fun family atmosphere in the Square,” Mr O’Connell said.

This will include an enforced alcohol ban in the Square between 6pm, tonight and 6am tomorrow morning. The Square will also be closed to traffic from 8.30pm tonight until 1.30am tomorrow. “There will be a significant Police presence at the party but we are expecting everyone to behave themselves pretty well,” Mr O’Connell said

Carparking will be available in the Kilmore St and Farmers Car Parks between 7.30am and 11.45pm; and the Oxford Tce Car Park from 7.30am until 12.45am.

Tonight’s event is the first in this year’s SummerTimes Festival programme, which will run until the end of February. The party is being sponsored by Anthony Harper Lawyers in association with the Red Badge Group and Christchurch City Council.
