Christchurch City Council Media Release 3 September 2002

Sister Cities Sign Completes Roundabout

The flags of Christchurch’s six sister cities, erected on the roundabout at the Memorial Avenue and Orchard Road junction in 2000, will soon have their own sign.

A 3.4 metre long by 1 metre high ‘Sister Cities Roundabout’ sign is being installed at the roundabout at 11am on Monday 9 September.

Twenty-four pupils from Merrin School, who next year will visit Christchurch’s Korean sister city of Songpa-gu, will be at the event dressed in Korean national costume to mark the occasion.

Christchurch City Council International Relations Co-ordinator Dave Adamson says the idea of the flags was to raise the profile of Christchurch’s sister city links around the world.

“It’s an appropriate location for the flags, as they catch the eye of incoming visitors to the city. The sign, which will be erected facing the airport, marks the final stage of the project,” he says.

Christchurch’s six sister cities include Kurashiki (Japan); Songpa-Gu (South Korea); Seattle (USA); Adelaide (Australia); Christchurch (England); Gansu Province (China).
