Penelope Swales brings Australian Folk to Cathedral Square FREE Friday Lunchtime Concert, Friday 20 September 2002, 12.15pm to 1.15pm, Cathedral Square A musical journey is about to pass through Cathedral Square. Penelope Swales, accomplished Australian singer and storyteller will perform this coming Friday lunchtime in a free concert proudly presented by Christchurch City Council Leisure. A born raconteur, Swales combines wry and often outrageous humour with her deep passion for people and issues. She has been performing professionally for over 15 years and recently toured through the US, the UK and Canada, playing her thought provoking folk which mixes old and new technology. Political, cultural and personal stories form the basis for her work. No sooner had the September 11th tragedy struck than she had written ‘Safe Home’, tackling not only the loss of humanity, but also the racial, political and military fallout of terrorism. Swales recording career spans 6 solo albums to date. They chart ‘the arc of a woman’s’ development’, and will be joined this year by ‘Monkey Comfort’ which draws on the lush imagery of the natural world to describe human condition.
