Inaugural Lighting of Hereford Street Bridge

Feature lighting, recently installed on the Hereford Street Bridge will be switched on this Thursday.

The lighting, which is on both sides of the bridge, has three aspects:

  • Special feature lighting, utilising fibre optics, which incorporates four changes of colour during a set time period
  • Flood lighting to highlight the façade of the bridge
  • Under bridge lighting which illuminates the water and the underside of the bridge

The project was initiated by city businessman David Bolam-Smith in a submission to the Council’s draft Annual Plan to light up central city bridges.

‘The Hereford Street Bridge is the first stage in a larger project looking at lighting for several of the City’s bridges. As well as making the City more attractive the Council wants to make the areas around them safer and more welcoming for people out walking at night – both locals and visitors to the City,” says Cr Anna Crighton, Chair of the Council’s Culture & Heritage Committee.

The Lighting Ceremony will take place at:

7.30pm sharp, Thursday 19 September 2002
The Hereford Street Bridge
Corner Hereford Street and Oxford Terrace

The public is welcome to attend and are asked to assemble on the Oxford Terrace River Bank alongside the Hereford Street Bridge.

A quartet from the new Army Band will play as people arrive leading up to a fanfare as the switches for the lighting are thrown by Cr Crighton and David Bolam-Smith.
