Central City Produce Market - one step closer

A fresh produce market for the Central City is one step closer following a decision made at the September meeting of Council last Thursday.

Earlier this year a proposal was received by the City Council from Christchurch Market Limited (CHL), a recently formed company, to operate a fresh produce market.

Having investigated several possible sites for the market CML sought and received Council approval to operate on part of the Tuam Street car park and Council owned land adjacent to the car park at weekends.

A license agreement, with the Council as landlord, is to be finalised and will be subject to approval from the Central City Streets Sub Committee.

“The market will be a colourful and vibrant attraction to this part of the Central City, bringing more people into the area - both locals and visitors. This will, no doubt, indirectly benefit the surrounding businesses. Now it’s over to Christchurch Market Ltd to get it up and going,“ says Cr Denis O’Rourke, Chair, of the Central City Street Sub Committee.

CML says the market will be about fruit, vegetables and produce including wine, herbs, spices, bedding plants, jams, cheeses and some deli products. It is intended to be an exciting and lively place for people to shop and meet with friends.
