Christchurch City Council Media Release 4 October 2002

Update Regarding City Housing Contamination Issues

Further testing is soon to get underway at the six City Council housing complexes, which showed some contamination present after preliminary soil testing last year.

The Council’s contracted environmental scientists, Montgomery Watson Harza, have advised that further testing at all six complexes should be completed by Christmas this year.

Following the further tests, results will be presented to the Council in a full report with recommendations for each complex. This full report will be made available to the tenants of each complex.

Rob Dally, Christchurch City Council Property Manager, reiterated that in dealing with contamination of land, including ex-landfill properties in Christchurch, the Council was dealing with a very complex matter.

“The Council is committed to ensuring a healthy and safe living environment for all its tenants. We are working as quickly as we can to get the testing underway, and move towards appropriate solutions,” he said.

For more information: Please see the agenda report to the Council’s Housing Sub-Committee, which is included in next week’s Community and Leisure Committee agenda.
