Faulty Papanui water main being replaced The water main running under Bellvue Avenue into Papanui Road is being replaced by Christchurch City Council contractors. The main, which runs under the railway line just south of St James Park, had failed several times since it was laid in 1989, causing disruption to residents and businesses in the area. The Council had put money aside to replace the main in the second half of 2003, but the latest break, in August this year, meant the work was brought forward. Council senior engineering officer Mike Kininmonth says the work will take about three weeks to complete. The new pipe is being pushed inside the existing pipe, which means less road has to be dug up. For more information: Call Bryn Somerville on 941 8949 |
