‘Bantam of the Opera’ take roost in Cathedral Square

Free Friday Lunchtime Concert, Friday May 10th, 12.15pm to 1.15pm, Cathedral Square.

An eclectic mix of instruments such as accordion, trombone and mandolin are used by members of Bantam of the Opera, who will perform their unique blend of folk, barn dance, and vaudeville-style music this Friday in Cathedral Square.

The band have a background in Morris Dancing, and specialize in presenting music associated with English County Dances, especially 17th Century Playford Dances. Playing music for dancing is their area of expertise, and the emphasis is on having fun.

“ We don’t take ourselves too seriously”, says Dave Hart, accordian, melodeon and bass player, ‘ and our intention is to entertain. We believe that if we are enjoying ourselves, which we do, that it will show through our music!’.

Dave and Jane Hart are joined by Kelvin Jamison and John Jones, and the band have been together since 1995. Playing all major folk festivals throughout New Zealand, Bantam of the Opera will be appearing at the Wellington folk festival in October this year.
