Major tunnelling and earthworks project on Ensors Road/ Brougham St
The replacement of a large sewer pressure main near the Ensors Rd/Brougham St corner involves tunnelling under two rail tracks, as well as Brougham Street.
A test run was held on Tuesday, then workers started tunnelling 24 hours a day under Brougham Street. The job is being done by March Construction, and is expected to be finished by the end of next week.
This is the first time a pipe of such large diameter and distance has been replaced in Christchurch using trenchless techniques.
The old pipe was collapsing and needed to be replaced to cope with development in the area. The new one will link the pump stations at Locarno Street and Randolf Street, which are also being upgraded.
