Something to make a noise about?
Christchurch residents are going to be asked about their experience of noise in the city, in a survey which gets underway in March.
Christchurch City Council, Environment Canterbury, and the Christchurch International Airport Limited have jointly commissioned the survey which aims to gain an understanding of residents’ experiences of noise around the city, and the impact that noise may have on their quality of life. The survey will focus on noise from a variety of sources including industrial premises, major traffic thoroughfares, aircraft, and general neighbourhood activities. Terry Moody of the Council’s policy team said that results of the survey will be useful in situations where issues are to be dealt with under the Resource Management Act, and for future planning by many units within the Council. “This is the first time that the Council has undertaken this type of survey on such a scale. Local research of this type, which is representative of our population, is much more useful than making assumptions based on international data”, said Moody. The survey will be mailed in early March to a sample of Christchurch residents, requesting a response by mid to late March. It is hoped that up to several thousand completed questionnaires will be received.
