Garden City Big Band to Play Cathedral Square

SummerTimes® Free Friday Lunchtime Concert, Cathedral Square, 12.30pm to 2pm

“Jazz is at a high ebb right now” says Stu Buchanan, Band leader and saxophone player extraordinaire for The Garden City Big Band, who play Cathedral Square this Friday lunchtime as part of the hugely popular SummerTimes® festival.

“It’s a niche interest area really”, he says, ‘ but swing is certainly back thanks to the likes of The Cherry Poppin’ Daddy’s and Robbie Williams – it all helps us pay the bills!’.

The Garden City Big Band have been together for over ten years and members come from all walks of life. They have the occasional student from the Jazz School come through for practical experience, and they play all kinds of gigs, from corporate dinners, to graduation balls, festivals, and special events.

“We play for the love of it really” says Stu, “ We like to build a rapport with the audience – that way everyone has a good time!’.

The Garden City Big Band will play jazz standards and interpretations this Friday lunchtime in Cathedral Square in a concert proudly presented by Christchurch City Council Leisure.
