Jahmen and The Quest for New Zealand’s Best Chip Shop in Cathedral Square

FREE Friday Lunchtime Concert, Friday August 30th, 2002, Cathedral Square. 12.15pm to 1.15pm.

Cruise to the funky Island rhythms of ‘Jahmen’ in Cathedral Square this Friday, and enjoy tasty free hot chips as the Quest For New Zealand’s Best Chip Shop begins!

‘Jahmen’, all members of the Samoan Congregational Church Choir, consists of Steve Tafea (ex Brothers in Harmony, Pacific Underground) on rhythm guitar, Fuivai Fiso (ex Rising Stars, I & I) on keyboards, Allan Asomua on percussion, Malua Iakopo on bass guitar, and Mark Molioo on drums.

The band has been performing their original blend of reggae, funk, grunge, and rock, for seven years, and last year they featured at the local Pacific Festival ‘Ua’.

The Quest for New Zealand’s Best Chip Shop begins on Friday, and Cantabrians will be able to get their free punnet of chips from 12noon to 1pm in Cathedral Square.

The Potato Growers of New Zealand and the National Heart Foundation are right behind the event, with the later educating chip shop owners on ways they can reduce the fat content of chips through improved cooking techniques.

Members of the public can vote for their favourite chip shop by filling out an official entry form and placing it in specially marked voting boxes at participating shops or by calling 0900 4 CHIPS. Voting closes on September 30th. Mystery judges will visit all 100 shops to choose the five regional and Grand National Winner.
