Sam Manzanza - ‘The Rhythm Man’ - Plays Cathedral Square
FREE Friday Lunchtime Concert, April 19th, 12.15 to 1.15pm, Cathedral Square.
Originally from The Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire), Sam Manzanza will liven up Cathedral Sqaure this Friday with his brand of ‘ Hot Dance Music’ – African music with a jazz and blues sound.
Manzanza has toured widely throughout New Zealand, playing at outdoor festivals, corporate events, and night clubs. Sam played in Wellington at the New Years Eve 2000 event, and has played News Years Eve concerts in Napier, and Gisborne over the last couple of years.
With a CD released in 2001 called ‘Jamena’ (half of my face) he is bringing his unique style of world music to New Zealand. “ It’s good dancing music’ he says, ‘ It’s the kind of dancing music that when you hear, you can’t stay still, the next day you don’t need to go to the gym’.
Sam plays guitar, blues harp and percussion as well as being the band leader and vocalist. His powerful rhythms blend traditional and modern beats, and many of his songs are performed in French, English and Lingala – his tribal dialect.
