Vandals Smash More Cherry Trees

Vandals have again attacked cherry trees in blossom in Riccarton Avenue, near the Christchurch Hospital.

Last night at least another five trees had their branches ripped off.

The Yoshino Prunus x Yedoensis cherry trees were planted in along the length of road about five years about by the public to mark World Family Day.

Vandals have regularly attacked the trees in this road, with about 15 being damaged this year alone.

So far this year a total of 63 trees have been replaced in Hagley Park - because of destruction by vandals.

“This morning the trees had their branches yanked down. It is mindless vandalism, which unfortunately is all too common along this road,” said the Christchurch City Council’s Botanic Gardens Services Manager, Craig Oliver.

“We would like the public to keep an eye out for us and report any sightings of vandalism. Not just along Riccarton Avenue but in other streets, too.

Vandalism in parks, streets, and reserves costs the Council thousands of dollars every year,” he said today.
