Tree Planting First Of Athfield Plans
The first steps in the Ian Athfield-designed enhancements to Cathedral Square are under way.
The Christchurch City Council adopted plans by architects Ian Athfield and James Lunday to change the Square several months ago.
Two areas of the Square are being prepared for nearly 20 trees that will be planted this month. A large, 3m-wide raised planter will be placed on the edge of the road on the south side of the Square facing the Bank of New Zealand. Seating will be fixed to the planter and face the bank building. Twelve hornbeam (Carpinus betularis) trees will be placed in the planter and grown in the pleached fashion. This is a system where the branches are trained along stainless steel wires. Ian Athfield has placed the raised planter to create an enclosure on that corner. He says he wants to make the area from the Millennium Hotel to the BNZ a more pedestrian friendly place. At the north entrance to the Square six pin oak (Quercus palustris) trees will be placed in Colombo Street between Gloucester Street and the square. The trees will be planted within days. Cast-iron gratings will be placed around the trees by the end of the month. Other changes in the Square include the removal of bark and plantings around lime trees in two planters west of the Godley Statue. Lawn will be installed in these planters by the end of the month. Investigation of alternative paving materials for the north, south and east entrances is under way and mock-ups of new bollards, proposed by Ian Athfield, will be ready soon.
