Students Heading To Japan
Fourteen local secondary school students will head to Japan this month as part of a two-week student exchange.
The Year 10 students, from various high schools in Christchurch, will visit Kurashiki, a city of 428,000 located on the eastern side of Honshu, the largest of the four main islands of Japan, 650 km south-west of Tokyo. It is the 23rd annual student exchange to Kurashiki, a sister-city of Christchurch since 1973.
The students will attend high schools in Kurashiki as part of the exchange programme. They will be home-hosted for most of the visit, experiencing typical Japanese family life first hand. To be accepted for the exchange, each student had to be studying Japanese at school and be considered good ambassadors on behalf of Christchurch. They will be accompanied to Kurashiki by Christchurch-Kurashiki Sister-City Committee member Colin Donald, his wife Justine and Christchurch City Council International Relations Co-ordinator Barbara August. The students leave for Japan on September 25 with a formal farewell to be held on September 14 at the Christchurch City Council. Photo Opportunity: The students will attend a formal farewell function on Friday September 14 in the Councillors Lounge at the Christchurch City Council offices in Tuam Street at 10am. Deputy Mayor Lesley Keast will farewell the students. Further information: Christchurch City Council International Relations Co-ordinator Barbara August ph: 941 8251.
